Kettering High School Old Girls' Association - Introduction

Kettering High School for Girls opened in September 1913 in premises shared with the Boys Grammar School which had moved from premises in Gold Street. The provision for a secondary school for girls and boys had been agreed by the Northamptonshire County Council in 1909, although originally plans were made for only 100 girls to attend the school. When the school opened there were 124 pupils, 48 from the pupil-teacher centre which trained teachers and 75 from a private school in Station Road which had been established in 1899. The Headteacher of the new school, Miss Edith Bristol, was formerly senior history mistress at Glasgow High School, and Miss Charlotte Butcher became the school's Deputy Headteacher and remained until her retirement in 1933.
